Brief history of the station
There is evidence that the citizens of Penzance had concerned themselves about fire arrangements as early as 1743, when a Fire Engine and twelve leather buckets were supplied by the Penzance Corporation at a cost of 10 shillings and 6 pence (approx £10).
The fire engine was replaced in 1774 and the Sun Insurance contributed £5 towards the cost.
The method adopted by the brigade about the mid-nineteenth century for obtaining water for fire-fighting came under severe criticism from the Inspector of Public Health, as the procedure was to let loose the water from the reservoir at the top of Causeway Head to run through the streets, it then being damned by sandbags near the fire. This method, as well as being inconvenient, caused alarm to those inhabitants who were not near the supply.
Early records show that the first motorised fire engine was provided by Mr. R.F. Bolitho in 1927, the old steam engine being given to the neighbouring fire brigade at Marazion. The Bolitho family had also shown considerable interest in Penzance Fire Brigade affairs for several years before this time. Around this time, the volunteer brigade at Penzance included serving members of the local constabulary who were required to undertake this work as part of their normal duties.
During the war, the fire service was nationalised and the Penzance Fire Brigade became part of the National Fire Service.
On the 1 April 1948, Cornwall County Fire Brigade was formed and since that time, Penzance has provided protection to the town and its surrounding area.
The station moved from the previous location at the Mennaye football ground to its present location at St. Clare on the 18 September 1976.
