NHS 70 – what gift could you pledge on their 70th birthday?

70 years ago today the NHS was born! And today on its birthday, we’re asking you to make a birthday pledge as a gift.

Here’s 7 things you can pledge to do that will help the NHS be here for another 70 years:

I pledge to quit smoking:

Quitting or switching to vaping is one of the best things you can do to improve your health if you’re a smoker. 70% of smokers want to quit, so maybe now’s the time?

Smoking related health issues in costs the NHS £29.4 million a year.

Be there for your own 70th birthday and for your family. Get in touch with Healthy Cornwall for one to one support to quit or switch or call 01209 615600.

I pledge to be more active:

We’re not asking to you to pledge to run marathons or even a 5k, being active doesn’t mean being sporty. Modern day life makes it easy to spend hours sat at our desks, in front of the TV or in our cars.

Being a bit more active can have huge health benefits such as reducing the risk of strokes, type 2 diabetes and heart attacks. It can even improve your mood and mental health.

Did you know 10 minutes brisk walking a day counts as exercise? Try downloading the Active 10 app to help you start getting more active. Want to do more than just walk? There’s hundreds of activities across Cornwall, and you can find ones near you on the Get Active Cornwall website.

I pledge to drink less alcohol:

We’re not saying you shouldn’t drink at all, but we should drink sensible amounts. The recommended maximum level is 14 units a week. That's the same as 5 pints of beer or lager, 6 medium glasses of wine, 10 small glasses of wine or 7 double measures of spirits.

If you or someone you know might be drinking too much you can get support from Addaction by calling 0333 2000 325.

I pledge to eat well:

Eating well is an important part of maintaining good health, and can help you feel your best. It can be simple too.

Having a healthy weight can reduce your risks of serious health conditions such as diabetes and heart disease. Our Healthy Cornwall service provide free weight management groups across Cornwall. So if you want some support to eat well and lose weight get in touch with them on 01209 615600 or visit the Healthy Cornwall website.

I pledge to talk about mental health:

Don’t be afraid to talk about how you’re feeling, and share your thoughts with others. Despite the myth, there’s nothing to be ashamed of.

It’s equally important to ask our friends about how they are feeling too. We’ve got some top tips on how to improve mental health and how to start conversations on the How Are You Really Feeling page of our website.

I pledge to get checked when I need to:

If you’re invited for screening or check-ups by your GP or hospital it’s really important that you attend because finding any problems early makes them easier to treat.

If you’re aged 40-74 you could be eligible for a free NHS Health Check. Health Checks can help prevent things like strokes, kidney disease, diabetes, dementia and heart disease. Find out more about getting a check up

I pledge to choose well:

Choosing the right NHS service is really important, we can all play a part in helping the NHS work as well as it can. By not adding additional pressure to GPs and Emergency Departments we can save services for those people most in need.

Find live waiting times for Emergency Deaprtment at Treliske and minor injury units across Cornwall, and more information on the Choose Well webpages.
