Kate Kennally, Chief Executive of Cornwall Council reflects on why she thinks it’s important to celebrate this day: “I’m really pleased that Cornwall Council is celebrating International Women’s Day.

“Women have come a long way in the UK but there’s more to do and here at Cornwall Council we really want to narrow our gender pay gap.

“There are still many women and young girls across the globe that don’t get the opportunity to fulfil their potential and, with women making up over 50% percent of the population, who wouldn’t want to create the opportunities for women to give off their best?”

As someone who has worked hard to progress in her career we asked Kate what she feels is the key thing that has helped her to get where she is today. Kate said: “The key thing that has enabled me to progress my career is taking the opportunities that came my way.

“I was always taught that if I could do at least as good a job as my line manager then why not have a go? Put yourself forward, don’t think you’ve got to stay in a job for a really long time. If you think that if you could do at least 50% of the next job then put yourself forward because you never know what could happen.”

Inspiring advice for us all! Read on to hear from some other very special women at Cornwall Council:
