Continuing to review Special Educational Needs Provision

A range of changes have already been put in place as a result of the SEN Review conducted in 2015-16, which established priorities to develop aspects of special educational provision for children and young people who have SEN in Cornwall.

Developments already in place include:

  • changes to support services
  • detailed guidance for all schools
  • adjustments to buildings
  • training for staff

Additionally, significant building work is already underway at Trevithick School to expand the Area Resource base (ARB) from September 2018.

Further Development Opportunities

In 2018, 2019 and 2020 some money can be accessed by the local authority to develop SEN provision.

A key focus for Cornwall is to develop the Area Resource Bases. There is a particular need in the East of the county and at secondary school level.

The funding is welcome but is limited, for example it is not sufficient to pay for a whole new building.

Our bid to establish a new special school for children with SEN has been successful. As part of a national initiative with the Department for Education (DfE) this will increase the range of education provision in Cornwall.

The special free school will provide 65 places for children, aged from 5 to 16,  who have Social Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs and education, health and care (EHC) plans. Visit the Special Free School web pages for more information.
