Food Safety and Hygiene

Cornwall Port Health Authority support businesses to ensure they handle food safely and hygienically so consumers don’t come to harm. 

Food Safety officers within Port Health work closely with colleagues in the inland food safety team to carry out a number of functions with businesses.
These can range from risk category A premises such as shellfish depuration centres to category C/D premises (e.g. small yacht clubs). For a full list of functions please visit our inland food safety page.

The last decade has seen a rapid increase in cruise liner holidays worldwide and Falmouth is a true reflection of this trend. During 2016 we had over 20 cruise calls. Modern liners can accommodate several thousand passengers and half as many crew again. It is the role of the Port Health Authority to ensure that food hygiene standards aboard such vessels are of the highest order to prevent outbreaks of food poisoning.

This Authority also regularly carries out inspections of the fish processing operations undertaken on board British flagged fish factory vessels for compliance under the Food Hygiene (England) Regulations 2006. There are currently approximately 20 vessels on the Authority’s register, which is the major part of the British fleet. These vessels are now required to present themselves for inspection annually.
