Eileen Lees

A retired midwife, Eileen is an active member of the One and All cycling group organising charity rides and a regular Saturday cycling group. Volunteering with Healthy Cornwall and for the WRVS at Treliske, Eileen also assists her son during lambing season.

Speaking about how she started her journey into health and fitness, Eileen explains,"when I retired in 2008, I thought I needed some constructive exercise to help with weight gain and encroaching type 2 diabetes. I saw a walking group called 'Strolling Back the Years', which I joined, but found that it wasn't right for my pace.

I then found a leaflet in a doctor's surgery for a group called 'Pedal Back the Years'. It sounded as though it was ideal for me, so I oiled the bike chain, checked the brakes and I am still cycling to this day. I now have an e-bike which means that no hill is too steep for me!

Since taking up cycling, Eileen hasn't looked back and now volunteers her time to help to promote the sport to other people across Cornwall.

"I volunteered to help promote cycling with Mobilise Health Promotions and now with Sustrans. Now I volunteer on at 'Saddle Up Saturdays' as part of the One and All cycling club. It's great to be able to help other people get back on their bikes and to give them the confidence to be able to exercise.

The social side of this is the most important thing - there's lots of chatter, tea, coffee and cakes."

Speaking about her love of volunteering, Eileen says, "volunteering has played an important part in my retirement years. I enjoy working alongside people of all ages. Having worked in the NHS as a midwife for my whole career, I still feel passionate about people being able to live healthy and active lives and to do something which they find fulfilling and satisfying."
