Help us to make Cornwall and The Isles of Scilly free from Artificial Trans Fats

Artificial trans fats damage our health.  Eradicating transfats would prevent 27,000 premature deaths a year in the UK. (BMJ 2011; 343:d4044 – references at bottom)

The World Health Organisation (WHO) calls artificial transfats ‘toxic’ and wants us to stop eating them.  In Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly we want to help people to do this.

Trans fats occur naturally in some food (dairy, meat).  It is believed that these consumed in small amounts are not harmful to health.  However ‘artificial’ trans fats produced through an industrial process called ‘hydrogenation’ are harmful to our bodies.  The process changes the natural structure of the oils to harden them.  It is these artificial trans fats from which we want to make Cornwall free.

Once the Artificial Trans Fats are in our bodies the body has no way of getting rid of them.  They clog up our arteries and over a period of time may lead to an early death.  They raise cholesterol levels in the blood, which can trigger health conditions such as heart attacks and strokes.

To help prevent hundreds of early deaths a year in Cornwall, we would like to eradicate these artificial trans fats from our local produce and help local people not to eat them.

Trans fats are usually labelled as ‘hydrogenated fat’ in the ingredients.  They can be used for frying or as an ingredient in processed foods, such as cakes, biscuits and fast food.

Eating artificial trans fats is unnecessary and we would like Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly to be free from them.

We are asking local food producers to sign up to a pledge to remove hydrogenated fats and oils from their ingredients - please view our Business Pledge web page.

We are asking people to check ingredients for hydrogenated oils and fats and make an informed decision - please view our Avoiding Trans Fats web page.

Together, we can make Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly free from artificial trans fats.
