The Director of Public Health must produce an annual report each year, which is an independent assessment of the health needs and assets within the local area with recommendations for improvements.

He/she has a number of important responsibilities not only around improving the health and wellbeing of local residents but also leading on the local authority duties for health protection including emergency planning and resilience, plus assuring all major health programmes that should benefit local people, for example, the immunisation and screening programmes run by NHS England.

The Public Health Desk is a single contact point for Elected Members to help them manage local enquiries about public health issues such as providing health protection advice, public health intelligence or guidance on evidence-based practice.
