Salt bins

Traditionally we provided salt bins on sharp bends and hills on main traffic routes. There are currently 488 salt bins across the county, now managed by town and parish councils.

Due to the risks of the public trying to use salt (commonly known as "grit") at dangerous locations, salt bins will only be sited at locations off the main precautionary salting routes, in villages or near schools, making things safer for pedestrians.

Whilst we do not have a statutory duty to provide salt bins, we appreciate they can be useful in certain areas.  In agreement with local town and parish councils, we fill them once at the start of each winter.

Should these bins require refilling during the winter season the local town council or parish council should contact us.

If you are aware of a damaged or otherwise unusable salt bin, please use the link below:

Report damaged or unusable salt bin

If you would like to request a new salt bin we recommend that you contact your parish or town council.  Please be aware that the provision of any bin, by the town or parish council, will be at the discretion of that council, as it will have to pay all costs. We are not able to provide any more salt bins.

If a town or parish council wishes to provide additional bins within highway limits, the location of the bin must be agreed by Cormac’s Highways and Environment Manager for that area. This is to ensure that the proposed location does not have a negative impact on general road safety.

Bags of salt are available for public purchase at builders’ merchants and we would advise you to use these in the first instance.

If you know of a salt bin that needs refilling please contact your local town or parish council.

You can view a map of our precautionary salting network using the online mapping system. You can view the whole network across Cornwall, or enter a postcode or street name to view which roads are salted in your area.
