Bencoolen Bridge Design Constraints

There are a number of design constraints that had to be taken into consideration including the design codes requirements to ensure a 120 year design life and minimising both the maintenance costs and the health and safety risks to those who undertake maintenance operations to the structure.  As the bridge forms part of the flood defences for Bude Environmental constraints that needed to be considered included the need to preserve or increase the flow capacity of the river and maintain the height of the flood defences whilst not increasing the carriageway levels.

Other constraints include the construction cost, the need to accommodate the services during the construction, maintaining two-way traffic across the river throughout the scheme, reducing the construction period and minimising any risks of pollution.
