Walking and Cycling Measures

The main objective of this network was to increase the number of people walking and cycling, including delivering better commuter routes.

The network has delivered a direct, accessible and safe cycling and walking network connecting the proposed developments and the existing residential areas along the western corridor with key employers, education establishments, the city centre and train station.

Sections of footway/carriageway have been improved to provide shared use paths and crossing points for cyclists and pedestrians throughout the A390 corridor starting at Maiden Green in the west through to Dalvenie Roundabout at County Hall.

In order to manage the growth in traffic anticipated through development of the area, then a greater proportion of sustainable transport trips is needed. By reducing the number of local car journeys, there will be benefits to local air quality conditions (Highertown has an Air Quality Management issue) and health benefits will be delivered through the promotion of active travel for work and leisure. 

The network links with existing on and off road cycle networks in the area, including the Coosebean route in to the city.

The walking and cycling section of the scheme was completed in early 2018.
